There is so much to rave about Fairview’s annual La Capra Goat Run. Trail runners can expect a real treat of a route, climbing out from vineyards onto the fynbos vegetation slopes and upper areas of the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve. Catering for all level of runner, there are entry level 5km and 8km routes, and for the more adventurous ‘goat runners’, the challenging 15km and 28km ‘extreme’ options include summiting the striking Paarl Rock, the second largest granite outcrop in the world (after Uluru in Australia). Ascending the ‘Pearl’ is memorable, as you feel so small, trickling over its vast slope. The panoramic view from the top is astounding, towards Table Mountain and the sea in the west and the Boland Mountains in the east.

The diversity in the ‘extreme’ course includes climbing to a plateau of tranquillity that invites some fast, open running on packed jeep track around dams. There’s a single-track dip through a magical botanical garden, and once off Paarl rock, you descend (hundreds of stairs) through thick indigenous forest. Back onto the fynbos lower slopes, it’s a meander back to Fairview to join in the festivities. All sorts of food and drinks (including La Capra and Fairview wines, and locally brewed beer) are on offer, to enjoy on a large lawn area, and with hundreds of people sharing the pleasure, there’s a fantastic vibe. Prize giving includes plentiful Fairview goodie spot prizes, and the heartening generous donation of proceeds from race entries to a number of beneficiaries (Drakenstein Hospice; Boland Autism; Sunfield Home; Wellington Lions Club; Paarl Mountain Reserve, The Sunflower Fund).

This year the La Capra Goat Run will set off from Fairview on Saturday, 15 October 2016. All participants can look forward to a goodie bag that includes a La Capra T-shirt, Fairview cheese, yogurt and wine, a Fairview wine tasting voucher and discount vouchers valid on the day.
