Well-known Northern Cape Optometrist and Endurance Athlete, Russell Nugent, takes up partnership in the Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon that is held annually in October.
South Africa, 04 February 2020 – Founder of the Energy Lab Running Company and prominent optometrist in Upington in the Northern Cape, Russell Nugent, has become one of the owners of the Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon, and he sees significant growth for the 250km race and its life altering experience for endurance athletes worldwide.
Having participated twice in the 7-day, self-sufficient, multi-stage event and with the achievement of second place overall in the recent KAEM 2019 race that takes place in his own backyard, it was a natural move for the avid trail runner to intensify his investment in it.
Now in its 21st year, the Augrabies Falls region race is the second oldest desert footrace of its kind in the world. On average 25% of runners are repeat participants and of those approximately 80% are multiple.
Becoming part of the KAEM management is a dream come true, said Nugent. “This race just captured me from the beginning,” he explained, as he reminisced about his feelings at his first KAEM start line in 2018. ”The physical challenge, camaraderie and ‘family type of feel’ where people make friends for life make KAEM truly life changing.”
The three original founders, Estienne and Nadia Arndt and Simon Kelly, together with the broader KAEM management team, have established this sporting brand as one of the top three self-sufficient multi-stage events in the world. They have not only succeeded in doing that, they have also established a legacy that is unique to KAEM,” he adds.
“Living in the Kalahari, I am not only passionate about the environment but the Kalahari is in my blood. Being part of KAEM going forward and taking this brand to new heights, is an exciting new adventure that gets my adrenaline flowing even more.”
KAEM exacts extreme commitment for an extreme experience: 250 km multi-stage event where the Kalahari Desert challenges every athletes’ endurance to the max. Get your entry for KAEM 2020 that will take place from 29 October to 8 November 2020.
