Wanting to run the 65km route in this year’s Ultra Trail Cape Town (UTCT) event, but don’t have the funds or haven’t gotten around to entering yet? Well here is your chance to get two free entries and do a ‘green-load’ of good for undergreened areas in South Africa and Africa. Greenpop, the non-profit, Treevolution people have joined forces with the team at UTCT this year in a campaign to see competitors raise the most number of trees for the entries.
“At Greenpop we are all about getting people active, and not anxious, about the future of our planet,” explains Nicola Lawrence, Fundraising Manager at Greenpop. “We were very inspired by the UTCT event which encourages people to get outdoors and take part in healthy activities and felt it was the perfect synergy with our mission to (re)connect people with our planet by planting trees through urban greening and reforestation projects, spreading environmental awareness, and activating people through green festivals and workshops.”
Greenpop was founded in 2010 and has since planted over 66,000 trees at schools and other urban sites as well as forests and farms across South Africa, Zambia and Tanzania. “Trail runners in Cape Town are incredibly spoilt for choice with the amazing nature trails we have literally on our doorsteps,” says UTCT race organiser, Stuart McConnachie. “We felt that it was part of our duty to the mountain and trails to get involved with Greenpop and give something back for all the great times we have on the runs.”
So how do you get involved in raising trees for Greenpop and having the chance to get 2 free entries to UTCT 65km route? It’s quite simple really – go to http://greenpop.org/race-with-us/ and start your challenge to raise as many trees as you can for them. The trees are each valued at R120, a really small amount considering all of the good they are to do for us on planet earth!
