Pre-entries for the Fairtree Simonsberg Contour Trail Run Stage Race, which kicks off the annual trail race season this weekend, will close at midnight on Wednesday, 7 February.  More than 400 runners have already entered for the two-day event that will start and finish at the Dirtorpia Trail Centre just outside of Stellenbosch on 10 and 11 February 2018.

Runners can customise their entry and opt for one or both days:  25km both days (R720), 15km both days (R550), 15km and 25km mixed (R600.00), 15km on either day (R300) and 25km on either day (R380). The entry fee includes timing, breakfast, lunch, water points and a medal.  The entry fee includes timing, breakfast, lunch, water points, a bottle of wine and a medal.

A total purse of R10 000 will be up for grabs for the overall winners with equal prize money for the ladies and men. Only runners, who complete both days of the same distance, qualify for prizes and trophies. No prizes will be awarded to those who mix their distances or complete one day.

On Saturday runners in the 25km will do the entire ascent of the Klapmutskop.  This is the only annual opportunity to do so in a trail run and will require climbing a few steps towards the end of the first climb as the route merges with the hiking trail routes on the koppie. The reward is stunning views over the Boland from an elevation of 523m.   The 15km runners do not complete the entire climb to the top, making for a slightly easier ascent, but they still top out at around 400m above sea level.

On Sunday runners will venture take a completely different route towards Uitkyk Wine Estate with the 25km runners treated to the 10km Never Say Neverending Again single track trail winding midway up the Simonsberg Mountain.  Climbing to 640m above sea level, runners will enjoy panoramic views of False Bay all the way to Table Bay and north up the West Coast.

Runners that took part in 2017 will be glad to know that the repeat start loop has been eliminated from the 15km route to allow for more single track, while the 25km runners can look forward to over 17km of single track trail.

Weekend runners also have the option to enter the 7km fun run on Sunday at R200.  Although entries will be accepted for the fun run over the weekend and on the day, meal vouchers must be booked in advance at  The finish carnival at the Dirtopia Trail Centre will offer loads of kids’ entertainment and is a lovely way to spend time outdoors with family and friends.
