The organisers of the largest XTERRA in the world, Stillwater Sports, have announced that the show will go on despite the event not yet securing a title sponsor for 2019.
“Although the ideal situation would be to have a title sponsor, cancelling the event is not viewed as an option,” confirms Michael Meyer, Managing Director Stillwater Sports. “We’ve had 15 magnificent years of hosting XTERRA in South Africa and are extremely proud of the fact that for the past couple of years XTERRA SA has donned the crown of largest XTERRA in the world. South Africa also boasts two XTERRA World Champions in Conrad Stoltz (who secured the title multiple times) and Bradley Weiss, while a number of our age group winners continue to fare exceptionally well at the XTERRA World Championship each year.”
“We are thankful for the support received both from local and international XTERRA Warriors,” continues Meyer. “Although, for now, we will cut back on certain event elements, we guarantee that the route experience will be just as memorable if not better in 2019. Together with our existing sponsors and partners (whom we appreciate immensely) we look forward to welcoming each and every entrant to the 2019 XTERRA Grabouw for an off-road adventure like no other.”
“We’re thrilled to have XTERRA South Africa kick off the 2019 XTERRA World Tour racing schedule,” said XTERRA President, Janet Clark. “They live and breathe XTERRA in South Africa. It’s where champions are made and honored, guys like Conrad Stoltz, Dan Hugo, Bradley Weiss, and the list goes on. For our international community, it’s a true destination race. A place where you can experience African drummers welcome you out of the water and to the finish line, then go on a Safari adventure the next day. It’s especially tempting for those from the Northern hemisphere, where it’s freezing in February. In South Africa it’s summertime and the weather is wonderful. And the organization is world-class. Michael (Meyer) and his team are the best in the business, create magnificent racing routes, and welcome athletes both young and old, from first-timers to world champs.”
According to Bradley Weiss, XTERRA World Champion (2017) and XTERRA SA Champion (2016 and 2018), XTERRA Grabouw is one of his favorite races. “Having family and friends on the side line is something I truly love, making it a really special race for me. Having the opportunity to race for them is amazing. XTERRA Grabouw is the largest XERRA in the world with one of the most demanding bike courses. The field is always deep, providing great competition and a very close and exciting race. It’s the perfect race to start off the season.”
Entries for the 2019 XTERRA Grabouw will open this coming Thursday (15 November 2018).
