The 19th Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon completed in true athletic competence dominated by South African local stars

Well-known local elite trail runner, Bennie Roux finished first in 24 hours 11 minutes while Erica Terblanche, winner of KAEM 2002 again took first position in the ladies’ race with 28 hours 49 minutes.

 

Kalahari Augrabies, 26 October 2018 – The 19th Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon (KAEM), known as the “Big Daddy” of ultra-trail marathons hosted 56 runners from 12 countries, pacing their way across the wide expanse of the Kalahari Desert while pushing personal boundaries to achieve remarkable goals.

 

Local South African runners took top honours in this year’s 7-day self-sufficient stage race with a total distance of 250 km. Bennie Roux (RSA, 24h11.01) was followed by newcomer Xavi Marina (Spain, 24h38.07) and Mark Curtis (UK, 26h05.33) in second and third place. In the ladies’ race, Erica Terblanche (RSA, 28h49.48) celebrates her second win while Toosie Bawden (South African citizen currently living in the UK, 31h46.45) and Estelle Geerkens (RSA, 32h23.06) took second and third positions respectively.
