All regular trailrun rules apply. There is compulsory gear for you to carry and this applies to all routes. This consists of: Waterproof shell cover/top. At least 1.5 litres of water. A cell phone in case of emergencies. Some sort of snack to keep your engines running. There are no official water points on route, but there is plenty of fresh water on the mountain. Be prepared to get your feet wet. You will be crossing some rivers, this is trailrunning after all. There are photographers and french maids on route, smile, flash, do whatever it takes to be famous. Race Venue: The start finish zone is located at the "Old Bells Lodge" on the edge of the Berg River dam, ( 33°56'12.83"S, 19° 4'27.14"E). Coming from Paarl side, head through Franschhoek on the main road (R45) until you hit the T-Junction at the Franschhoek Monument. Turn right and then right again onto the Robertsvlei road. Carry on for 5km and marshals will direct you to the parking.
Route info: 10km: Beginner trail run, mostly on forest tracks and gravel roads, with some singletrack and short technical (loose rocks, bushy) section. Moderate inclines. Your feet may get wet at river crossings. All rocks are slippery! 20km: Not for beginners. Open gravel road start with a hill to spread the field, takes you to a vertical firebreak climb, and on to a gnarly and exposed single track - with amazing views. This is a 'no passing' zone, as a tumble will go on for a while. Over the neck and on to forest tracks and wooded river-side singletrack. That's halfway! This is not a sprint, but an adventure. 35km: For the hardcore mountain goats. Follows the same route as the 20km, then vears off to circumnavigate the Berg river dam.
Cut-off : Sweep runners are armed with Tazers and a mean attitude. There is no 'walking' category. Please return to your car by nightfall. Bastille Day Festival: All runners have been set aside entries into the Bastille day festival marquee. Tickets at a discounted price of R125 and are available to runners at the tourism office on presentation of runners coupon that you receive after the race.
Good luck
